My goal is to depict the core of what holds my attention. There might be a universal attraction to the beauty or drama of the subject, but what I notice or disregard depends on what matters to me. That’s why everyone sees things differently. And why art is autobiographic.
I gravitate towards subjects and situations that pose challenges. The thrill I get from painting comes from negotiating situations I haven’t figured out how to solve yet. Each painting is an investigation with layers of decisions, mistakes, corrections, and things learned; discoveries now buried in the paint that elevated the vocabulary. The finished piece shows the destination, not the path taken. When I’m painting from life I am reacting to what is in front of me, and when doing studio paintings I’m reacting to what is in my head. In all cases my desire is to describe. Rather than give details of what I see, I try to locate the launching point that gives just enough information for viewers to fill out the rest based on their own experiences. It’s as much eliminating noise and misinformation as including specifics.
For this exhibit we have chosen works to illustrate the range of my interests and efforts over the previous decade. The breadth of subject matter also adds context and definition to the individual images. My art is not confined by subject, geographic location or stylistic school. I paint the opportunities and adventures that life parades in front of me.
